Always in all ways
ZZColdstores is moving forward sustainably in the port.
As a forward-looking port authority, we are fully committed to sustainable growth. We invest in innovative solutions that reduce our ecological footprint, improve the living environment, and accelerate the transition to a climate-neutral port. For us, sustainability is not a side issue, but a strategic pillar that prepares us for the future of logistics and port-related services.
To further increase the sustainability of our business operations, we will significantly expand our solar energy capacity over the coming years. Our warehouses are being equipped with solar panels in stages. We use the green electricity generated for our own operations. In doing so, we reduce our energy consumption from fossil sources and actively contribute to a more sustainable energy grid.

Shore power
Quiet, clean, and low-emission at the quay.
A key priority in our sustainability strategy is the rollout of shore power. By providing ships at the quay with a fixed power connection, they can switch off their diesel generators. This results in a substantial reduction in CO₂ emissions, nitrogen, particulate matter, and noise pollution for the surrounding area. Looking ahead to the European requirement that major ports must have shore power facilities available from 2030 for container and passenger ships, among others, we are already investing in modern infrastructure so that shore power becomes the standard with us.
Circular processing of fruit.
We strive to limit food waste to a minimum. If, unexpectedly, fruit can no longer be delivered, it is still given a sustainable second life. Instead of incineration, we transport it to a biogas digester, where it is converted into green energy and useful residues. In doing so, we close the loop, limit spoilage, and contribute to circular processing within the food chain.
Sustainability
Climate-friendly cooling technology.

We are also making significant strides within our cooling and storage facilities. Traditional freon-based cooling systems have been replaced by modern CO₂ cooling systems. This technology is considerably more environmentally friendly, more energy-efficient, and has a much lower impact on the climate. In this way, we not only comply with stricter laws and regulations, but we also consciously choose sustainable cooling technology that aligns with a green port.
